Damascena Ethnographic Complex

Preserving the art of Bulgarian rose oil

The Damascena Ethnographic Complex is a cultural and historical destination located in the heart of Bulgaria’s Rose Valley, near the village of Skobelevo between Kazanlak and Pavel Banya. Built around the first private Bulgarian rose oil distillery, founded in 1991, the complex is dedicated to preserving and presenting the traditions of rose cultivation and rose oil production that have defined the region for centuries. Surrounded by rose gardens and carefully designed landscapes, it offers an authentic atmosphere that reflects the spirit, aromas, and heritage of the valley.

At the center of the complex is the rose oil distillery, where visitors can learn about the process of rose picking and the extraction of rose oil using both traditional and modern techniques. Guided tours reveal why Bulgarian rose oil, often referred to as “liquid gold,” is prized worldwide. The ethnographic museum complements the distillery by showcasing traditional tools, household items, and installations that illustrate everyday rural life before industrialization, giving insight into the customs, skills, and way of life of past generations.

In addition to its cultural exhibits, the Damascena Ethnographic Complex features tranquil gardens, scenic walking paths, and a Thracian cultural area that enrich the visitor experience. With more than 150 varieties of roses and a peaceful natural setting, the complex is a place to explore, learn, and relax. It appeals to visitors interested in history, traditions, nature, and Bulgarian craftsmanship, making it a memorable stop in the Rose Valley for both cultural discovery and quiet enjoyment.
