Rose Festival Kazanlak

Every spring, the town of Kazanlak and the surrounding Rose Valley are filled with the fragrance of millions of blooming roses. The annual Rose Festival celebrates one of Bulgaria’s most recognizable symbols — the oil-bearing **Rosa Damascena** — with traditional rose picking, folklore, music, exhibitions and a spectacular parade through the centre of Kazanlak.

## A tradition dating back to 1903

The Rose Festival in Kazanlak has been organized since **1903**, making it one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most distinctive annual celebrations. It is dedicated to the centuries-old relationship between the people of the Rose Valley and the cultivation of the Damask rose, whose blossoms are used to produce Bulgaria’s world-famous rose oil.

The festivities take place across Kazanlak and nearby villages during May and early June, when the roses are in bloom. The programme combines local traditions with concerts, exhibitions, workshops, cultural events and performances, attracting visitors from Bulgaria and around the world.

## The rose-picking rituals

One of the best ways to experience the festival is to attend a traditional **rose-picking ritual** in the fields around Kazanlak.

Rose picking traditionally takes place early in the morning, when the flowers are fresh and contain the highest concentration of aromatic oils. During the festival, organized rituals allow visitors to enter the rose fields, pick blossoms and experience the atmosphere of the harvest.

## The Rose Queen

Another emblematic tradition is the election and coronation of the **Queen of Roses**.

Young women from Kazanlak compete for the title, and the newly elected queen becomes one of the central figures of the festival. Her official coronation is accompanied by music, dancing and performances by folklore ensembles.

The Queen of Roses also takes a prominent place in the festival's grand parade, traditionally appearing in a decorated procession accompanied by her runners-up.

## The Rose Festival Parade

The culmination of the celebrations is the **Rose Festival Parade**, held in central Kazanlak on the first Sunday of June.

Thousands of participants take part in the procession, transforming the streets into a colourful celebration of Bulgarian culture. Folklore ensembles, musicians, dancers, students and artistic groups from Bulgaria and abroad march through the town, while traditional costumes, flowers and rose-themed decorations fill the centre.

With more than 3,000 participants in some editions, the parade has become one of the largest festive processions in Bulgaria and the signature event of the Rose Festival.

Visitors who want to learn more about the tradition should also visit the **Rose Museum in Kazanlak**. Located in Rosarium Park, the museum presents the history of rose cultivation and rose-oil production in the region through photographs, tools, documents and historical artefacts.

The museum also tells the wider story of how the Damask rose became an important part of the economy, culture and identity of the Rose Valley.

Rose oil remains one of Bulgaria's internationally recognized products and is highly valued by the perfume and cosmetics industries.

## More than roses: the Valley of the Thracian Kings

A visit to the festival can easily be combined with exploring the extraordinary historical heritage surrounding Kazanlak.

The region north of the town is known as the **Valley of the Thracian Kings**, where archaeologists have discovered numerous ancient tombs, sanctuaries and treasures associated with Thracian rulers and aristocrats.

The most famous monument is the **Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak**, dating from the 4th century BC and included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Other remarkable sites in the valley include Golyama Kosmatka, associated with the Thracian ruler Seuthes III, as well as the Shushmanets, Helvetia and Ostrusha tombs.

The Iskra History Museum in Kazanlak displays important archaeological finds from the region, including artefacts connected with the ancient Thracian city of Seuthopolis, whose remains now lie beneath the waters of the Koprinka Reservoir.

## Explore the surroundings of Kazanlak

The Rose Valley also provides an excellent base for visiting several major Bulgarian landmarks.

North of Kazanlak rises the **Shipka Pass**, famous for the battles that played a decisive role in Bulgaria's liberation during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. Visitors can climb to the impressive Freedom Monument on Shipka Peak and visit the beautiful golden-domed Shipka Memorial Church nearby.

The distinctive Buzludzha Monument is also within easy reach, making it possible to combine the Rose Festival with a wider journey through Bulgaria's ancient and modern history.

## Taste Kazanlak and the Rose Valley

The festival is also an opportunity to discover Bulgarian cuisine. Traditional favourites include Shopska salad, banitsa, moussaka, stuffed peppers, grilled kyufte and kebapche, kavarma and tarator.

Kazanlak has several specialties of its own. Visitors can try the small **Kazanlak doughnuts**, while rose-inspired products range from sweets and preserves to drinks and souvenirs.

One of the region's more unusual specialties is rose rakia, made using the aromatic petals of Rosa Damascena.

## Planning your visit

The main celebrations of the Rose Festival traditionally take place during the **first weekend of June**, although events and rose-picking rituals begin earlier and continue across several weeks.

The festival attracts a large number of Bulgarian and international visitors, so accommodation in Kazanlak can become difficult to find around the main weekend. Booking well in advance is recommended. Nearby towns and villages can provide alternatives for visitors travelling by car.

Most outdoor festival events are free, while some activities — particularly organized rose-picking rituals, competitions and reserved seating for major events — may require tickets.

Visitors arriving by car should also keep in mind that streets in central Kazanlak are closed during the main celebrations and the parade. Arriving early and parking outside the immediate centre can make the visit considerably easier.
