Surva International Festival of Masquerade Games

The Surva International Festival of Masquerade Games in Pernik is one of Bulgaria’s most spectacular winter traditions and one of the largest gatherings of masquerade groups in Europe. Held every January, the festival transforms the city into a vibrant celebration of ancient customs, elaborate costumes, rhythmic bells and folklore.

The main attraction is the impressive procession of kukeri, survakari and other traditional masquerade groups from across Bulgaria and abroad. Participants parade through central Pernik wearing dramatic masks, colourful costumes and heavy sets of bells. According to tradition, their dances, noise and ritual performances drive away evil spirits and bring health, prosperity and a fertile new year.

Surva is deeply connected with the traditional masquerade customs of the Pernik region. The Surova folk feast in the Pernik region is inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting the importance of these traditions to Bulgaria's cultural heritage.

The 2027 edition will once again bring together thousands of participants and visitors for several days of festivities. Alongside the masquerade parades, visitors can expect folklore performances, concerts, exhibitions, workshops, traditional food and crafts, creating a lively winter atmosphere throughout Pernik.

Located only around 30 km from Sofia, Pernik is easily accessible for a day trip, although visitors who want to experience the full festival programme may choose to stay for the weekend. Surva 2027 offers a unique opportunity to see some of Bulgaria's most striking living traditions and experience the sound, colour and energy of the country's famous winter masquerade culture.
