Vasil Levski Sofia Airport

About

Sofia Airport is the main international gateway to Sofia and the busiest airport in Bulgaria. Located just a few kilometers east of the city center, it provides convenient access to the capital and serves as a key hub connecting Bulgaria with major European and international destinations. Its strategic position makes it an important entry point for both tourism and business travel.

The airport operates two passenger terminals. Terminal 2 handles most scheduled international flights and offers modern facilities, including check-in areas, security and passport control, retail shops, restaurants, lounges, and business services. Terminal 1, the older of the two, primarily serves low-cost and charter carriers. The terminals are connected by a free shuttle bus, ensuring smooth transfers for passengers.

Sofia Airport offers a wide range of services designed to support a comfortable and efficient journey. Travelers can find dining options, shopping areas, lounges, and essential passenger services within the terminals. Facilities are adapted to accommodate different needs, including services for families, business travelers, and passengers requiring special assistance.

In recent years, the airport has undergone modernization and operational improvements aimed at enhancing passenger experience and increasing capacity. With a focus on efficiency, safety, and service quality, Sofia Airport continues to develop as a modern European airport while supporting the growing number of visitors and strengthening Bulgaria’s international connectivity.

Transportation

Sofia Airport is well connected to the city through a combination of metro and bus services that provide reliable and affordable access to different parts of Sofia. Both terminals are integrated into the public transport network, making it easy for passengers to continue their journey shortly after arrival or reach the airport in time for departure.

Metro Access

The airport is served by the Sofia Metro via a station located at Terminal 2. The metro line connects the airport with the city center and major interchange stations, offering a fast and predictable journey. Trains run frequently throughout the day, typically every few minutes, making it one of the most convenient transport options. A single journey ticket costs around 1.60 BGN, making it both efficient and economical.

Bus Services and Lines

Several bus lines operate to and from Sofia Airport, serving both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Line 84 and Line 184 connect the airport with central Sofia, including key stops such as Orlov Most and Sofia University. Line 384 provides a connection between the airport and the Mladost district, linking to other parts of the city. Buses run regularly, and a standard ticket also costs around 1.60 BGN. Tickets can be purchased from drivers (cash), vending machines, or via contactless payment methods on selected vehicles.

Night Transport

Night bus line N4 connects the airport with the city center during overnight hours, ensuring that passengers arriving late at night or departing early in the morning still have access to public transport. This service operates at scheduled intervals and follows a route that links important central locations with the airport.

Inter-Terminal Shuttle

A free shuttle bus operates between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, providing a quick and convenient transfer for passengers who need to move between terminals. The service runs at regular intervals throughout the day and night, ensuring smooth connections regardless of flight schedules.

Public transport tickets are affordable and easy to obtain, with pricing typically based on a single journey regardless of distance.
