Qatar Airways Suspends Doha–Sofia Flights Indefinitely

Qatar Airways has confirmed that it is suspending its flights between Doha and Sofia, with no planned resumption currently scheduled after the 2027 winter season. While the airline has not announced an official reason for the decision, industry analysts believe aircraft have been reassigned to more profitable routes following the disruption caused by the conflict in the Middle East.

The Doha–Sofia route was first launched in 2011 and, after a pandemic-related pause, resumed as a non-stop service in December 2021. The airline had continued selling tickets for future flights before unexpectedly removing the route from its reservation system and informing tourism industry representatives that it would also close its office in Bulgaria.

A setback for Bulgaria's international connectivity

The suspension represents a significant loss for Bulgaria's air connectivity. Doha serves as one of the world's largest international hubs, offering convenient one-stop connections to destinations across:

• Asia
• Australia
• Africa
• The Middle East

Qatar Airways was also the only Gulf airline serving Sofia and is widely recognized as one of the world's leading carriers.

Tourism industry raises concerns

Representatives of Bulgaria's tourism sector have described the decision as a major setback for both inbound tourism and Bulgarian travelers. They warn that the loss of the Doha connection reduces travel options and increases dependence on other airlines.

At present, the primary gateway from Sofia to Asia and many long-haul destinations remains Turkish Airlines, while Flydubai, in partnership with Emirates, provides additional onward connections through Dubai.

Industry organizations are urging Bulgaria to actively pursue new partnerships with international carriers. One proposal is to attract Etihad Airways, which has recently expanded its network across the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

Looking ahead

At present, there is no confirmed timeline for the return of Qatar Airways flights to Sofia. Unless the airline revises its plans, Bulgaria will remain without a direct connection to the Doha hub, making travelers increasingly reliant on alternative routes through Istanbul and Dubai for travel to Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Middle East.
