Giro d'Italia Grand Start

8 May 2026 - 10 May 2026

Burgas

The Giro d'Italia 2026 will make history by starting in Bulgaria for the first time, with the opening three stages showcasing the country’s diverse landscapes. The race begins on 8 May in the coastal town of Nessebar, marking the Grande Partenza of the 109th edition of the prestigious Grand Tour. This international start highlights Bulgaria’s growing presence on the global sporting stage and offers a strong opportunity to present its scenery and culture to a worldwide audience.

Stage 1 runs from Nessebar to Burgas over 156 km and is designed as a flat, fast route along the Black Sea coast. It is expected to favor sprinters, who will compete not only for the stage victory but also for the first pink jersey of the race. The seaside setting and straightforward profile make it an ideal opener, likely to finish with a mass sprint and set an energetic tone for the Giro.

Stage 2, from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo, stretches over 220 km and introduces more challenging terrain as the race moves inland. Rolling hills and key climbs, including a demanding approach to the finish, could create early time gaps and opportunities for breakaways. Stage 3, from Plovdiv to Sofia over 174 km, returns to a mostly flat profile but includes a mid-stage climb that may influence the race before a probable sprint finish in the capital. Together, these three stages offer a varied and balanced start, combining speed, tactics, and scenic diversity before the race continues in Italy.
