The International Festival of Traditional Folk Costume in Zheravna is one of Bulgaria’s most unique cultural events, held annually in the architectural reserve village of Zheravna, nestled in the Balkan Mountains. Established in 2008 by Hristo Dimitrov, producer and founder of the National Folklore Ensemble “Bulgare,” the festival was inspired by a traditional Bulgarian wedding organized entirely in folk costume. Today, the three-day event takes place every year during the penultimate weekend of August in the Dobromeritsa area above the village. Set among pine forests and preserved 18th- and 19th-century wooden houses, the festival invites visitors to step back 100–150 years into the atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Revival period.
What makes the festival truly extraordinary — and especially fascinating for foreign visitors — is its strict authenticity concept. Entry to the festival grounds is allowed only in traditional folk costume (Bulgarian or from other countries), whether authentic, stage-style, or stylized. Modern items such as plastic products, contemporary bags, sunglasses, and visible technology are prohibited. During the first two days, personal photography is not allowed, ensuring a fully immersive historical experience. Mobile phones may be used only in designated areas. Inside the festival grounds, guests enjoy live folk music and dance performances, traditional crafts demonstrations, a lively open-air market (charshiya) with local food, wine and rakia, and a large free camping area with basic facilities. The event is privately organized and funded through tickets and donations, preserving its independent and patriotic spirit. For visitors seeking not just a festival but a complete journey into Bulgaria’s living traditions, Zheravna offers an unforgettable cultural immersion unlike anywhere else in Europe.
