St. Sophia Church

Ancient church that gave Sofia its name

The Church of St. Sophia is the oldest church in Sofia. Built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it is one of the capital's oldest preserved buildings. The church gave the city its present name. The building has survived several earthquakes and has been used as a church, mosque, and even as a warehouse.
